Pediatric Why Help? |
Why We Need Your SupportGenetic research is extremely expensive and most molecular projects require millions of dollars to complete. Additionally, we need to get the word out to the rest of the world that something can be done for blind children. Discoveries in one part of the eye often provide insights into other parts of the eye. For example, similar genetic epidemiological strategies are being used to study keratoconus and age-related macular degeneration (a disease with genetic component affecting the retina, which causes loss of acuity or central vision). Similarly, in a rare genetic disease called Lebers Congenital Amaurosis, patients have both keratoconus (affecting the cornea) and retinal degeneration. So, finding genes for this disease may give us insights as to devising strategies for the treatment of more common diseases, such as keratoconus and macular degeneration. In essence, by supporting the Eye Birth Defects Foundation Inc., all of eye research will ultimately benefit. And, although we have some government funding, any additional support will help us speed up the advances required to prevent blindness. Your help will be greatly appreciated. |
